Week of September 9, 2019

Dear Fifth Grade Families,

We are now nearly half way through our first quarter already! Last week our students did their first poetry recitation of "If" and completed their first unit in math on whole numbers.

Please make sure that your students have copies of our current Classic-to-Keep, Voyage of the Dawn Treader, to bring to school. For future reference, we encourage 5th graders to annotate in their literature books as a method of encouraging active reading skills. Keep in mind that we do write in these books.

I wanted to send out a notice that as we continue in historical studies of the Mesoamerican peoples we will discuss human sacrifice. Our intention is to discuss the reasoning behind these rituals while avoiding their graphic details or depictions. We want students to understand how these mighty civilizations justified their way of life, rather than merely characterizing them as "savages". This discussion is also key to understanding why Spanish conquistadors found it necessary to try and convert the Mesoamericans to European Christianity. Please reach out to your homeroom teacher if you have any concerns.
