Great Hearts Day: Guidelines for notes and cards

 Dear 5th Grade Parents,

Coming up next Friday, February 12, is Great Hearts Day!  Our celebration differs from the popular Valentines Day.  For our school, it is an opportunity to remind ourselves of the value of friendship.

Students may bring (individually packaged for COVID) treats and write encouraging letters to their classmates, focusing on the virtue of friendship.  However, we would rather NOT have students go out and buy bulk Valentines Day cards.  We prefer our students to handwrite and design these notes themselves.

Our "Classics to Keep" are rich with examples of friendship to inspire your student's notes.  Consider...

  • Robin Hood - and his charismatic ability to use conflict to turn an enemy into a loyal ally.
  • The Princess and the Goblin - the princess and the miner's son must learn to trust and serve each other to best the devious plans of the goblins.
  • The Chronicles of Narnia - the Pevensie children grow in understanding and compassion with one another, and they befriend a wide array of magical creatures.
  • The Secret Garden - Mary and Colin are drawn out of their self-centered bitterness through making friends with Dickon and his animals.

“Much more surprising things can happen to anyone who, when a disagreeable or discouraged thought comes into his mind, just has the sense to remember in time and push it out by putting in an agreeable, determinedly courageous one. Two things cannot be in one place.”

- Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden
