Friendship Day, Monday, Feb14

 Dear 5D Parents,

We are very excited this year to be carrying on the Great Hearts tradition of celebrating “Friendship Day” on Monday, February 14.  On this day, in our classrooms we will be celebrating the virtues of friendship  (please note that this is NOT a Valentines Day Celebration).

In Fifth Grade we will enjoy a reading and discussion of story and Shakespeare’s Sonnet 29, as we discuss how friendship is represented in these texts and what it means to be a true friend.

Later in the day, we invite scholars to give small friendship cards to their classmates.  This is an optional activity.  Should your scholar choose to participate they must observe the following guidelines:

  • Scholars must make one card for each person in the class.
  • Cards must be homemade (NOT store bought)
  • Cards cannot exhibit popular culture references.
  • Cards should focus on the virtue of friendship and NOT Valentine’s Day (i.e. “You are a great friend” or “Thank you for being my friend.”)
  • NO candy!  Please do NOT send any treats or party favors to school.  Teachers will be providing a treat for the class to share.
  • Please send completed cards to school in a Ziploc bag on or before February 11th.

Please ask your homeroom teacher for a list of student first names if your scholar is addressing individual letters.
